#3 You Suck At Scary Stories

by Xenny Diemes

Camp Fortier is having its worst night ever, not because of a really sucky summer, not because of some random cancellation of a long-awaited event. But instead, it's just a bunch of losers having the daunting task of making the scariest story around the campfire and completely blowing it big time. The group of six campers: Jack, Martin, Cheryl, Christopher, Dana, Louis and Anna do their best to give their best scary stories, what they got instead was a bunch of over-clichéd, already-heard-of crap that even bad horror movie directors wouldn't touch. The group argue over whose story is thought to be the scariest but they are only engaging into a bad war of words that had to be stopped by counselor Mike.
Mike steps in to break the fighting up and asks what's going on and they all complained that that neither of them would come up with a decent scary story and with short time, the night would be all for nothing. He wants to know what they got so far and each one of them makes their case. Jack started first since it was his idea to start this crappy story circle. His was a tale about the creepy old man living in an abandoned house that was once the cultural center of the town. But time and loss of money caused the place to be forced to shut down. Or it would have if not for the “incident” that be fallen the owner of the house. On the last day, old man Pieter, who ran the place had little to now defense to ward off the invaders who stormed in for anything valuable.
Tried as he might, the invaders threw him to the ground and pulled their guns, killing him with sixteen shots. In his dying breath, he cursed the robbers to be fallen with 16 horrible fates before getting the final shot to the head. When asked what ever happened to the robbers, Mike tells them that since old man Pieter cursed them, each of them had something horrible be fallen them. One for each day he cursed, over the sixteen days, each of the robbers had faced horrible misfortunes each one of the leading eventually to their deaths on the sixteenth misfortune. The fate of the one who made the seventeenth? In a fury after loosing his girlfriend, having scuffs with the police, corrupt police and a little run-in with the mob, the third guy had to choice but to fall back to the house where he first broke in and killed the owner. What he got instead was a haunting of a lifetime as the ghost of the owner came back for revenge. It all ended with the him and the whole house going up in flames.
Didn't take too long for the group to scream “boring!” and shatter any hopes of a good night. Then came Martin's turn. His story is the basic killer clown story which got a series of boos from the others. Martin annoyingly asks if they can do any better. Cheryl and Christopher jumped in together since their story is really scary but they never gotten the chance to cut in. The moment they talk about their story they were stopped not just because of a lack of originality but they got it from out of a movie the camp watched last night. Robots and Monsters don't make good scary stories. That leaves Louis and Anna to give their best. Mike already having the bore of the other kid's stories hope they can do better. Louis went first since he's seem so eager to share much to the objections of the others who suspect that he'll just go on talking about something with food. Louis is the resident fat kid. Louis assures them after telling him he's not fat that his story will be the scariest of them all.
It all started in a restaurant. Louis immediately shuts up anyone before they open their mouths and continues on. About a struggling chef who after a series of malicious reviews, as at the end of his rope and if he doesn't come up with the best dish in the world, he will have no choice but the shut the place his family had built for generations down for good. As he was about to close up for the night, a strange man entered though the door and hoping that the place isn't about the close, the Chef decided to serve the man past closing time. It was a simple bowl of soup and bread made right on premises like everything else and much to his delight, it was very good to him. The chef loves the encouragement and the one good review. As he asks for him toe leave to close the restaurant, the strange man offered a way for him to be famous. The chef was too in a bit of euphoria to think against it and he offered to listen. The mysterious man offered a special “meat” the rarest of them all that no man alive has captured except for him. He is no cook himself and is feeling very generous.
The chef at the moment did stop for a moment to question the mysterious man's offer in what kind of meat is it and if there is a catch to it all. All the mysterious man can answer is that there is no catch and he can't really disclose it for there are many who have sought after it and have died because of it. Being on the verge of bankruptcy and being a shame to the family business, he already has nothing to lose in taking the deal. And like that, as if he was signing a deal with the devil himself, he accepted the mysterious man's offer. The following night came and as the chef closes his store, a truck has arrived and the driver asks if he is the guy who has signed in. With a nod, the driver came out of his truck, goes to the back and opens the back. Much to his visual wonder, he can see loads of prime cut beef, various kinds of fish and sausages, all in a display that would make the most experienced butcher with a window display envious. But the driver pulls out a red box and hands it to him. The chef asks if he can sing it off but he didn't say anything as he handed him the box and then gets back to the truck to drive away except without saying that he already “signed” and laughs manically as he drives away leaving the chef confused. Entering into the kitchen, he made sure that he was completely alone and all the lights are off. Already the sense of doubt enter into his mind into thinking he can make such a deal with that person without really checking the facts. But it was already too late and he has to deal with whatever the driver has dealt him with. Cutting the strings and opening the box, the chef's expression changed from worry to shock.
The campers then cut into the story asking what was in the box even to Christopher who screams “What's in the fucking box!” like from the movie Se7ven. To which got a cold stare from the counselor Mike, it was worth it to him to scream that out. Martin continues first by jumping right to the chase.
Over the next few days, the chef has been happy to see a sharp rise in customers since the arrival of the new “meat” in which he made it into everything he can imagine: The juiciest burgers, the finest steaks, even hot dogs all came from this meat. It would be a matter of time before the news crews came into ask of his secret to which he tried effortlessly to not tell anyone but the fame is so much to bare. He can hardly believe that no more than a month ago, he was on the verge of closing forever and being a stain on the family's long history but now, he's back on top. He feels that nothing can stop him now... that is until the following night when the mysterious man has returned on the same time, right on the same night. The chef was happy to see him again and wanted to thank him for all of his work. Getting into that generous spirit again, the chef tells the mysterious man if anything he can offer as hius show of thanks.
There wasn't really a need for him to say thanks except he stopped cold and waved his hands over the chefs head. And like a bad hit to the soul, he grab his chest and aches. The chef is going into a fatal heart attack and can only reach out to the mysterious man as he collapses and dies. That has gotten some confusing looks from the campers and Martin gives out an extra spice of detail of what the mysterious man did next. He changed his form, into something inhuman, more bird than man, he pulled out a strange flask and opens it. Releasing a red cloud that pulled out the very essence of the dead chef leaving the body stone cold. The flask itself transforms into a red box. The same red box that he offered the chef in the first place. As he flies away, the following morning would be a left for shock for the news as they report the once famous chef and the last of a long line of a family restaurant dies. One of many  who have died the same way. One report that was often written off as being ridiculous, that the perpetrator is a giant raven.
A year has passed since the death of a famous chef and in another city, somewhere in the world, an artist is struggling with making the most famous picture as he desires to be in league with the greats like Picasso, Rembrandt, DiVinci and many others. Maybe even the first to becoming the 21st century's greatest artists. As he was lucky to get one of his earlier pictures into a local gallery, he sits and looks at his own work, wishing it could be better. As he bows his head down, he felt someone sits next to him, asking what is troubling him. Opening up a bit, the artist only points to his paining and says that his work could be better but not as good as he really wanted it to be. That is when the man asks an offer if he would like to be the greatest artist in this century, and all he had to do is to take his offer. The artist asks of his name. His reply that his name isn't of any concern to him but he is... mysterious.
That was the story that has finally got the attention and allure of the other campers. The story itself wasn't really scary per se, but it was a really thrilling piece. The counselor decides it was time to call it a night until a lone voice stops them all, because they forgot her: Anna. The counselor has little time to hear the story but Anna insists as much to the tiredness and dismay of the other campers, but her promise of keeping it short does get them to all sit back down. That's when Anna starts her story. But it wasn't really a story in any sense of the word, it was a harsh critique of everyone else's stories. Jack's story was complete bullshit with little imagination. Martin and the Twin's stories were too easy to rip because they don't have any sway to any reasonable audience who want to be scared. And Louis's story while interesting to say the least, didn't even bat her a raise of an eyebrow. Even though this raises the anger of the campers, Anna shuts them all up and tells her story.
The story takes place in the same night like now, with the same people, all fighting over which one is the best scary story teller around. Over the past minutes, one listener has heard a clichéd and boring story, one that was taken from a movie they saw and many others that bored the listener. Though this upsets the other storytellers and the counselor, Anna does continue on and tells the rest of the story about the fate of these crummy storytellers. She tells the legend of a monster that is in the form of a giant, humanoid bird. Who loves to stalk on the dumb and uncreative. In which Anna points the finger on all of them for boring her to death with their stories. But before they would get her for that insulting remark. Her eyes changed from it's themed dark blue to bright white and summoned a swirl of energy around her. Before their eyes the small human became the giant humanoid bird in the form of a hawk and screamed at them.
The group screamed and panicked as they ran for their dear lives knowing tha their friend is the very monster she talked about. Sitting at the fire by herself, she called out for the other hawks to appear out from hiding and surround the fire. Anna smiles to her fellow creatures that she had done her job. One of them was wondering how long before she had to scare the humans away from all of their stuff. Though admittedly their scary stories weren't that bad. As the surround the campfire and feel the mood set in it was time that they can do some scary stories of their own and Anna had the right mind to start first. By telling the story... of the humans and a day called. Manic Monday

The End.
There's bad scary campfire stories, and then there's these five who tell their tales of horror.
